POWDER COATING

What is Powder Coating?

Painting metal is not the same as painting a house or a canvas. When you want to color or restore finished metal fabrications you need a method that stands up to the toughness of the material. This process can be used for any piece of metal and in virtually any available color. We can match colors to factory specs or you can customize from a selection of thousands of Pan-tone color options. The entire process can be done within a single day here in Brooklyn. It’s true, NYC Wheel Professionals offers the fastest turn-around service in New York City.

How is Powder Coating Done?

he first step in the process is to wash the piece in an acid bath to strip remove any previous paint or clear coating. Next, the metal needs to ground and brushed to a smooth surface. The powder needs an even surface to adhere. Any defects in the metal can result in globs of powder caked to the final surface. This where professional services yield a much higher quality product. The final prepping stage is sandblasting any last imperfections from the entire piece. As we work mostly on wheel rims, this includes the internal parts where it meets the spokes and then the outside edge of the wheel. This cleans the wheel and allows for a rough surface whereby the powder can adhere to the metal more flawlessly. We are here to guide you through the choices, just call or text (646) 450-7290
The powder used is a blend of pigments, polymers, and bonding agents. By adding air to the powder it flows in a liquid-like state for easy application to the metal wheels. Rather than paint the wheels with a liquid, powder coating utilizes electricity to bind the pigment particles to pieces of metal. No liquid means no solvents for the color to stick. This results in zero chance of uneven streaks in the final product. An electrically charged particle gun sprays the powder as the technician gently coats the entire surface of the wheel. These guns can produce up to 80,000 Volts. Because of the electrical charging, the powder particles are ionized with a charge that attracts to the grounded metal. The result is a clean product with an even distribution of color and coating. If you can’t get your car to Brooklyn then we’ll help get it there.

Why Use Powder Coating?

Just as your teeth need fluoride to build and maintain a strong enamel around the softer pulp material, so too do metal parts need an enduring surface to sheen their brilliant sparkle after the beating of the road. The finished product is tough, durable coating that can resist fading, chipping, or smearing. That makes it the ideal application method for automobile parts, specifically exterior wheel rims that move at 100 mph! Or as fast as NYC traffic will allow.

To fully customize your wheels we also offer those extra finishes that really go the extra mile. From gloss to flat and three types of candy coating finishes, we even offer unique textured finishes for the true ballers.
